ISAC Boy's Basketball was the last event in this year's ISAC sports tournament. Our Boy's Basketball team was confident that we can place 3rd place and above this year after losing to Baguio by only 8 points, and they were the strongest team out there, next to the host school, BSM. After our arrival, we had the opportunity to observe the other teams warm up and shoot around, and get the feel for the courts. Our coaches were confident that we would do well this year. That night I went home to my host's giant mansion with AJ, my teammate who I was partnered with. We had a good dinner, and slept early, although it was hard, because we were both really excited to play.
The next morning, after the briefing of the BSM atheltics director and the team picture taking, the first game had started and were out at the warm up courts because we played the 2nd game of the day against Brent Manila, who we lost to by 5 points when we went to their home court at Brent South a week before ISAC, a game we SHOULDVE won if it weren't for my stupid last minute heroics, our should I say selfishness, wherein I took a shot with 20 seconds left on the shot clock, when we were leading by 2 points. Javier and I were both out of the game by the last 20 seconds of the 4th quarter, and Brent Manila was able to tie the game pushing it to overtime, without the 2 most aggressive scorers on the team. William on his own, took control of the game, scored 8 points in overtime, but still couldn't pull off a win. In short, we knew we could beat this team. After the 1st half, we were up by 4 points. But after bad passes, missed shots, slow help defense and maybe the pressure of being in an ISAC game, we lost to Brent Manila by 5 points, 24-19. Not to mention, an obvious lack of teamwork between our 2 coaches. I could tell, our team was devastated by this loss, as prior to the game, we were confident in pulling off a big win against this team. It hurt to loss to this team, but it was a reality, and we could do nothing but play harder in the next game against CIS. After lunch, we played Cebu International School. They had only 2 players who could really play in the team, but all of them fought hard. They had a couple of soccer players on the team that I knew of, but they just as hard or maybe even harder in basketball than in soccer. I asked some of the guys from BSM who faced CIS before us, and despite pulling off a 20 point win against them, they said that they were really tough and physical. But despite all of that, we started off really well against CIS. We were up at the end of the 1st half but they were only a couple of shots behind. I for one, was not having a great offensive game, I was missing my shots, and I couldn't run any plays and I was getting a lot of turnovers. During the 2nd half, we still kept the lead. However, our team was struggling on defense, we were lazy, we weren't closing out. They managed to shoot 2 open three pointers in a row because of our poor defense. By the 4th quarter, they managed to get an impossible and1 shot which gave them the lead. Our team was getting nervous, and I could tell that we were scared to lose to CIS. We still fought hard though, but they fought harder. It seemed obvious that even if our team was more skilled, they had more heart than us. We ended up with a disappointing 2 points loss against CIS. This loss hurt even more than the 1st game, because we KNEW we were better than them skillwise, but they won because they fought harder than us, and I don't know what it is but I think we were kind of intimidated by them or were scared to get aggressive against them which turned the game around in the last 5 minutes of the game.
Our last game was against BSM, a great all around team. They were good passers, shooters, and most importantly great defenders. They knew how to play together because their team practices all year round with the same coach in and out of school. Our game against them was pretty one sided, but we played a great game. They were just way more experienced than us, and their ball movement and shooting was excellent. We were again faced with the press and sometimes we broke it, sometimes we didn't. I got my game back on, making my open 3's, giving the ball around and calling plays, even if it didn't all work as expected. We lost our game against BSM by around 20 points, but at least we knew we were getting better and our feel to the ISAC games were improving. By the end of the first day we had 0 wins and 3 losses, luckily our girls were doing great, so that kind of made things better for the Brent Subic representatives.
Our second day in the tournament would determine if we were gonna make it to the semi finals or not. We had to win all our games this day. The first game was against FAM (Faith Academy Mindanao.) They had 2 shooters on their team, and they had one star player who was aggressive to the hoop. We HAD to win this game. We started off great, we were making our shots, our passing was alright, and we were running plays. The only bad part was our defense, we were weak under the ring as usual. We were leading after the 1st half, and we just needed to keep this up. During the 4th quarter, however, they were starting to catch up to us, and eventually took the lead, we got the lead back, but it was a really close game. We ended up beating FAM with 2 points and got our first win of the tournament. Our second game was against SISC - Southville. They were the defending champions, but their team this year was really young. Their ISAC team last year became their A Team who we faced and lost to by only 6 points in a pickup game a week before ISAC. Their players were young, but they were smart, and they knew how to pass the ball. Their teamwork was great, and they knew what to do on the court. Their plays were ran, ran correctly and continuously in all their games. Now it was our turn to face them. We started off alright, as in most games we play. We were again ahead after the 1st half. However during the 3rd and 4th quarter our defense collapsed. They probably scored around 12 points by open shots under the ring. Their wasn't much help defense, or defense at all, going on at the post. Their plays confused our big men and they had open shots under the ring. We again died down in the last few minutes and lost to Southville by around 5 points. This was another disappointing loss. Our hopes for making it to the Semi Finals were crushed as we had to face the undefeated team of Baguio who was beating every time by 15 points or more, including BSM who beat us by 20 points. However, we had to keep our heads high, and keep playing the game. There's no room for giving up and beating the potential Champions would be an honor, as we did in the ISAC tournament 2 years ago where we gave Brent Manila, the champions that year, their only loss in the tournament.
The next day, our team was sore, some players had some minor injuries, and our morale was low, but we had to fight. This might be our last game in the tournament, and the last game of the seniors, so all 4 seniors started this game with me. We had to play our heart out. Baguio was cruising through this tournament, and we were determined to give them their first real fight. We've played them before, and we know we have a chance against them. Unfortunately, they have gotten a lot better, and more aggressive, and they were prepared to defend their "no-loss" title, so we were down 18-0 in the first quarter. They were much more physical and their defense was intimidating. During the 2nd and 3rd quarter, their bench players played, so we managed to score a few points here and there. I made some shots, and I moved the ball around a lot, especially to the seniors. Our seniors that game gave it everything. I could tell. They were sprinting the whole time, and they fought hard for every rebound and every ball. In the 4th quarter, our real starters faced Baguio's starters. We had a good battle, but Baguio proved to be much stronger and played much smarter basketball than us. They made their shots but their wasn't really much teamwork. They just had 5 great individual players who all dominated. We lost to Baguio by 20 points or so but I believe that this is the game where we really gave it all. We respected the Baguio team, and I was really inspired to reach their level of basketball. Coach Crudo told us that it took them 4 years to get to this level. They were once like us, but because they worked hard for it during the season and during the off season, they were now the #1 team in the ISAC Boy's Basketball tournament this year.
Meanwhile, our girls were doing great, they made it to the semi finals, and beat FAM to make it to the Finals.  Unfortunately, they lost to the more experienced and much bigger BSM team placing 2nd in this years ISAC Girl's football tournament. After that, everyone was excited for the Basketball Finals game between BSM and Brent Baguio. It was intense. BSM was playing well, making their shots, getting steals through good defense and traps and Baguio was doing great as well with their 5 starters dominating on the court. By the end of the 1st half, Baguio was down 10 points and none of Baguio's bench players have played yet. During the 3rd quarter, their best player, Sung An had a scary fall, and was taken out of the game. Baguio was still trailing behind by 5-8 points. After a few minutes, Sung got back into the game limping! He still played even though it was obvious that he was really hurt. He still ended up scoring most of the points for the remaining minutes of the game! This to me, showed a lot of character, and passion, and heart for the game of basketball. For him to do that really inspired me to work hard so I can one day make it to that point, and to have that feeling of being in the Finals and sacrificing everything I can to win the game. Baguio was catching up, and were behind only 4 points, with only a minute remaining. Baguio fought hard, but they only had 5 players. BSM had 10. Only 1 Bench player played for Baguio for about 2 minutes while Sung had to get taped after his hard fall. BSM's bench could also shoot and play defense and pass, unlike Baguio, so it was obvious that Baguio's players were deteriorating and getting exhausted. Sung An, a great freethrow shooter probably around (80%) missed around 15 free throws in that game. In the end, Baguio lost to BSM by 6 points with a score of 60 - 54. It was a great game to watch. I was really inspired by it, and hopefully my teammates were. I learned to play under pressure, improve my passing and shooting skills, and I got to know my teammates, and how they play, a little bit better. As this year's team captain, I learned how to be an example to my teammates, to tell them what's right and wrong and how they can improve, even if I, myself make a lot of mistakes. I've learned how to talk to them in a nicer way, rather than screaming at them on the court and I've learned how to boost the team morale up by talking to them and telling them that the game isn't over until the final buzzer sounds. Even though we didn't do so well in this ISAC tournament, I learned a lot about the game, and how much more I can get better and how much more our team could improve. We have a long way ahead of us, and hopefully next year, we can bring home the gold!

(A)(S) Journal Entry #2 [Boy's Basketball Varsity]

The tournament in Baguio was a good learning experience for the team and myself. It was our first time to play away from home and I was excited.
Our first game was against a local team from Baguio (wearing green/white) We started off well with a 2 point lead after the 1st quarter. Our defense was great, and we had no turnovers. However, during the 2nd quarter, they put a press on us which changed the game completely. Some of my teammates, including myself occasionally had turnovers here and there because of the press. Sometimes it was because no one came to help and sometimes it was just because we threw the ball away due to panic. It was hard and we were down around 12 points after the 3rd quarter. Also, for some reason I felt really really exhausted already so I asked to be subbed out. This was unusual for me because I thought I was actually pretty fit and I haven't gotten tired during a game all season to the point where I needed to be subbed out. I don't know for sure if it was because of the higher altitude of Baguio or because we were just playing a way too fast pace. During the 4th quarter, we caught up to being around 5 points behind, but it was all too late.
Our second game was against Brent Baguio. We saw their game against the regional champion team, and they looked very intimidating as they won by a 0.3 second three pointer. I admit, I was a little nervous for this game as Baguio and Subic's Boy's team has always had a rivalry in ISAC competition including this year's ISAC volleyball tournament. We held them well during the 1st half of the game. The game started off with their top player, Sung An, getting the ball from the jumpball, dribbling and going for the drive, but getting rejected by me! I was pretty proud of myself for that. Our defense was still good, but our post players had trouble containing Buckley, their prime offense under the ring. We ran a couple of new plays, designed by our temporary head coach, Dr G, because Coach Crudo couldn't make it. The plays were successful and it made the giant Baguio coach furious! We trailed behind Baguio by around 5 points after the 3rd quarter as Javier and I were on fire. I was playing a good game, making 3's from every spot, and passing the ball around, usually ending up with Javier to finish or get to the free throw line. On the 4th quarter, Baguio started pressing again, we lost the ball again a couple of times, but we kept fighting. Javier and I continued to lead the team on offense but we ended up losing to baguio by 8 points. It was a great game and Dr G said that it was the best game that he's seen me play. I managed to score 22 points and 8 assists - almost reached my goal of a double double! (but still around 7 turnovers or so)
Our last game was against the regional champion team (wearing blue/white.) Dr G wanted us to have fun in this game and just play our game. He started the "asian" team as he called it, with William, Adam, David, Kevin, and Stin. We were down 10-4 in the first 5 minutes, but it seemed like they were having fun, especially because it was our first game with support from our girl's team. After, the obvious mismatch between the players, Dr G replaced the "asian team" with the "all filipino team (except for Louie) with me, AJ, Javier, Cyron, and Louie. We started doing something right on offense, but our defense was just crap. They were way more experienced than us, and it seemed like they've been playing together for quite some time. I personally disliked this team because they started their bench for the first half, which were still pretty good. Then during the 2nd half, their first team came on. Their first team was really frustrating and annoying. They trash talked me and the other Filipinos in tagalog, and made fun of our foreign players. They were very disrespectful, especially their point guard who was in my face the whole time he was on. We had some pushing and slapping, and elbowing going on behind the ref and everytime I would do something to him to get an advantage, he would act and fall down and complain to the refs. I really did not like playing against this team, but I knew that it happens a lot in the game of basketball especially if a team knows their good. We lost the game by around 20 points after a barrage of three point shots by the opposing team.
Overall, the trip to Baguio was a success, and I believe that it really improved our team's skills and teamwork, and let us realize how it feels like to play with pressure. We saw better players/teams than us, and hopefully inspired to reach that level as well. We're all getting better.

(A)(S) Journal Entry #1 [Boy's Basketball Varsity]

It's been roughly 2 weeks in the basketball season and so far, our team's been making steady progress. We had our first game 2 weeks ago but it was against each other. The game was split into 20 minute halves. On the first half, Dr G coached the team I was in, together with Jimmy, Jaffet, Kevin, Jack, Stin, AJ, and Kairen. On the second half, we switched coaches, and Coach Crudo was the one coaching us. Sadly we lost both halves but we did put up a good fight considering that the other team had a lot more experience that us. In our first game I realized that I needed to work on my passing and my turnovers because I had about 8 turnovers that game. After that game, I took practice more seriously and really focused on making my shots, and making good decisions on the court.
Our second game was last week, on Wednesday against a local school from Olongapo. I wasn't sure on how old they were as most of them looked like they were in their mid 20's. Most of their players were tall and their centers were all over 6 feet. However, I didn't let this get in my head because I knew that basketball cannot be won merely by the size and height of the players, it's all about determination, heart, and how smart you play on the court. I was really pumped for this game as this was our first official game against another team. As we finished our warm-ups and stretching, Coach called me over along with Javier, Adam, David, and Kevin to start off the game. I was honored to be a starter, and I didn't want to give Coach a reason to take me off the court. The game started off fast paced, but no one was scoring. We played good defense, but we couldn't score on the other end. Around 3 minutes in the first quarter, I scored a 3 pointer which gave the game its first few points. After that, the other team started retaliating, and had a few runs. By the end of the first quarter, we were down around 10 points. Throughout the rest of the game, it was starting to get obvious that our team was filled with a lot of talent, but we weren't playing together. I could also tell that a lot of us were really nervous as some players were playing their first basketball game. The other team continued to drift away and by the end of the 3rd quarter we were down 30. I was actually a bit disappointed and confused as Coach kept subbing in and out players and we never got the chance to get a nice flow because before we could, there were switches made. I did, however, understand why Coach was doing this. It was because he wanted to find out who plays well with who and of course to give a chance to other people and give them a chance to increase their experience in the sport. On the 4th quarter, we had a good 10-0 run because of our defense and because we started making our shots. In the end we lost the game, but our team learned a lot. I was especially frustrated of my turnovers and missed easy shots. In the next game, my goal is to have no more than 5 turnovers, and to get a double double. From what I remember I had 5 assists and 11 points and I have to improve those numbers. I also hope to get to the line more in the next game and score through free throws. Hopefully we continue to get better and come ISAC, we'll have a much more fluid transition and have better team chemistry. After that game, everyone seemed to want to take practice even more seriously than before, which was good. I can't wait until the Baguio tournament on March 4-6.

LS Soccer Club

My job is to teach the lower school kids the fundamentals of soccer such as passing, trapping, dribbling, and shooting together with some parents, teachers and other students. After an hour of training, there is a scrimmage game where my role is to referee the games make sure there is no conflict between the players, and to encourage team work and fairplay.

My personal goal is mainly to get to know some of the lower school kids since throughout my years at Brent, the high school have been becoming more and more distant from the younger ones. I want to further improve my leadership skills and help the younger kids to become better soccer players.

The lower school students will definitely benefit from this activity as they will learn the basic skills to play soccer and build friendships with other lower school kids from different grades. I will also benefit from this activity as I will develop new friendships, and become a role model for the younger generation.

Every Saturday, 3.45-5.30 pm, in the Soccer Field

CAS Proposal Form 5 (Boy's Varsity Basketball)

This form must be submitted to and approved by the CAS Coordinator BEFORE you begin your work.

Armand Mendoza

Boys Varsity Basketball

I am currently part of the Boys Varsity Basketball team. Practice is everyday starting from 3.40-5.40 pm. I am the Point Guard for this team together with my 14 teammates. The team will be cut to 10 players for the upcoming ISAC tournament and I hope to be the starting PG for this team.

This season I hope to be a more mature PG, have better vision on the court, lessen my turnovers, and most importantly improve my defensive skills. My big goal for this season is to average a double-double. I want to be a better leader for my team, communicate with my teammates, and build good relations with my teammates on and off the court. This will hopefully improve our team chemistry as the season goes on. I'm taking this year's basketball season seriously and I will do everything to improve my skills to be prepared for the ISAC tournament and hopefully be the first Brent Subic Basketball team in ISAC history to place above 5th place, but at the same time maintain my academic standings.

I believe that joining this team will benefit myself just as much as everyone on the team. It will benefit me, as this season will make me a mature basketball player since some of my teammates including myself are now the veteran players on the team. The whole team will benefit too as playing together as a team will improve our team chemistry, which will help us more consistent in transition and will hopefully lead to better friendships as well. My fitness will also benefit from this activity.

Everyday from 3.40-5.40 pm ISAC Boys Basketball: March 17-20

This year's 2011 ISAC tournament was a blast. Having home court advantage really helped. I learned many different lessons throughout the course of this year's soccer season and especially the ISAC tournament. During the Christmas break, I was actually kind of worried about ISAC since all I did everyday from about 4 pm to 7pm is play basketball (first at the street courts, then at Brian's house.) However, I did go to 2-3 soccer practices on the last week of the Christmas vacation. When we got back from the break, it was hard. We ran the hill workout, ran through the stations, ran sprints, and other conditioning exercises. It was tiring, but I worked hard since I figured, since I didn't have as much skill as my other teammates, at least be faster and stronger than them, right? After the first week of practice, we headed up to manila to challenge BISM in a friendly match on Saturday morning. We beat them 9-1, with 2 goals from myself. On the afternoon, we faced the Aguila team. They were older, faster, and more experienced. Most of their players were in college, and two of their players were in the Brent Manila APAC team. We lost 6-2 if I can remember correctly.
The following week, starting Thursday, was ISAC. I was getting really hyped up for it, and I took the last 3 days of practice really seriously. When I got home after practice everyday, I even did an upper body workout on my door gym just to get myself really fit for this tournament. On wednesday afternoon, I met my hosts and took them home. They were really friendly and I got along with them well. Later that night, I played basketball at Brian's house with around 40 other participants who were also there (most were just watching.) There I made a lot of friends and got to know a lot of people prior to the start of tournament the next day. The following day, ISAC had started. We made our ISAC pledges, met some more people, and saw how the other teams played, both girl's basketball and boy's soccer. Our first game was at 10:20 am. We started warming up at around 9:30. To my surprise, I wasn't nervous at all. In fact, I was really really excited to play in front of the home crowd. The game was intense, we were up 1-0 until the last 2 minutes of the game, where miscommunication and inattentiveness tied the game 1-1 due to a penalty shot. It was disappointing, but we had to keep our head up for the next game. Our next game was against Brent Baguio, at around lunch time, and it was a FUN game. We won the game 3-1, with one goal from myself via header. Although it was a great game, we were really tired as it was crazy hot during that whole game. Our last game that day was against FAM. We didn't play our game, no one was communicating, our team was pretty dead. Luckily, our captain, Chris Park, saved us with a last minute goal. It got us all excited, and we started trying harder, but it was too late to win the game. We drew the game at 1-1. I was really tired when I got home, but I wanted to be a good host, so I brought my guys out for dinner and met up with some friends, and met some new friends from the BSM team. By the end of the night, I felt really close to the whole BSM team which was really nice. I had a nice good sleep that night, and the next day I didn't want to lose a single game. That morning at around 8:30 am, I could feel the intensity and the determination from our team. I felt like everybody was in the zone, and focused including Javier, a close friend of mine, who I would normally joke around before every game. We took our warm up seriously, stretched, and prayed before the game. Our game against SISC started at around 9:10. We got the lead early, our defense was incredible, and we fought for every 50/50 ball. I really wanted to play as my excitement was feeding off my teammates goals, and when I finally got in. I wanted every ball. I told Chris to give me chips and long passes so I can make my runs. After a few missed attempts, I finally got one on goal. I felt so good, it was energizing. The whole crowd was roaring, and I saw my dad watching, which added on to my energy. After a couple of minutes, I got another goal via a cross from Chris. It hit my chest and rolled into the goal. It was epic. After that, I scored another goal, and had my first hat-trick in my life. It was a GREAT game and we won the game 8-1. In the afternoon we had another game against EIS. It was a match that everyone was looking for as we have been rival teams since the ISAC tournament was created. It was an intense match, but due to a bad call they scored a goal via penalty kick and we lost the game 1-0. It was a disappointing game, but we had a good fight. We had to forget about it and focus on the next day: the Semifinals, and hopefully the Finals (Note: The next day we didn't have our captain, Chris Park to play with us). That night I took my guys out again and met up with more people. Every night I brought my guys out, I met more and more friends. The next day was crucial. We had an easy game in the morning against Brent Manila, with a commanding lead of 9-1. I had one goal. Our team tried hard to conserve our energy since we knew we had to face EIS or BSM in the Semi Finals at 3 pm. At around 2 pm we started warming up. I can feel that everyone was really serious about this, no one was smiling, no one was fooling around, it was just pure focus. Mr Davis gave us a inspiring speech and we all prayed, I was a little nervous but it was time to show what we got. On the first 3 minutes of the game, my teammate, Don, scored a nice goal. The crowd was cheering and the whole team was ready to protect that lead. Sadly, in the 2nd half, BSM scored a goal on us via penalty kick -  AGAIN. However, we weren't gonna give up. I kept cheering the team while playing and yelling "Pressure!" during the game. It was intense, but in the end the game ended in another draw, 1-1. Now we had to do a shootout, and whoever wins proceeds to the finals to face Brent Baguio (BISB's win was a huge upset for EIS during the 2nd vs 3rd semi finals match.) The shootout was nerve wracking. Peter missed the first shot, but my 4 other teammates made it. Now it was all up to BSM's last kicker. If he misses it, we have another chance, if he doesn't they win. Luckily, he missed it! But sadly, the pressure was on me to make that shot. As I walked up to the ball, my heart was pounding, and I was sweating buckets. The crowd was silent. All I saw was the ball, and the goalie. I took a deep breath, and sprinted towards the ball to take the kick.... I MISSED. The crowd was silent, my teammates were silent, and I slowly walked to my teammates at the center field. We still had a chance, only if BSM's next kicker would miss the next shot. But.... he didnt. BSM moved on to the finals, and we had ANOTHER shootout, this time for 3rd place. We all encouraged Frank, because he felt like he was at fault, but we all told him that it was okay, and that he tried his best. The shootout for 3rd was also pretty intense. We lost cause our first kicker's shot was caught by EIS' goalie, but other than that, all the shots went in. So, the tournament was over for our team, and we ended up placing 4th. I felt really bad after losing, and my stomach felt uneasy, I've never had that feeling before. I felt sick. But after seeing my family and friends, and them cheering for me, I felt alright. I kept blaming myself for the loss in the penalty shootout against BSM, but thanks to my friends, they made me realize that it wasn't and that we had a good run this year. This whole ISAC was a learning experience for me, I learned how to deal with losses and dissapointments, I learned how to focus and clear out my mind of everything except for one thing (in this case, soccer), and I made a lot of friends. In the beggining of this season, I felt quite distant from my Korean teammates, but after ISAC, I felt like I had new brothers who will look out for me and help me out when I need them. Another ISAC has gone, and a handful of new lessons learned to improve my mental, physical, and emotional skills in life.

When my friend William told me about his plans for the upcoming weekend (to volunteer at the Tzu Chi Foundation Medical Clinic), I asked him to sign me up for it. I knew I would have to make some sacrfices such as missing the upcoming Pacquiao fight, but I was determined to join the mission on that weekend (Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010.) I quickly wrote my proposal and asked helped from our CAS director for  other requirements, and help set up meetings between him and my proposed supervisor for this activity, Mrs. Fang Lin Chen. After getting all the requirements done in a rush, I went to manila that Friday for personal reasons. On Sunday at 6 AM, I was quick to get up, ready to go to the mission. Unfortunately, my driver arrived late due to some traffic problems, and I left my condo at around 7.20, when I was to be there at 7.30! Luckily, the place was near, but again, the place was hard to find. We got lost and took wrong turns, but at around 7:45 I arrived at the Tzu Chi Great Love Campus. William and I met up right away and I was provided with my yellow volunteer vest (for easy identification.) A taiwanese lady toured us around the campus, showing us what we had to do, where we had to go, where the refreshments were, etc. At one point we passed by the main outdoor gymnasium where all the people for that day, were waiting to be treated and given medication. There was loads of people. As we were briefed about our job,  I couldn't help but notice the different posters on the hallways with different buddhist aphorisms from the famous Buddhist founder of Tzu Chi. Those aphorisms were actually quite interesting. My favorite ones were "To have two good hands and refuse to work, is no different than having no hands at all" and "Giving is not the privilege of the rich, it is the privilege of the sincere." When around 9 AM came around, we were ready to start. Waves of people started coming in at the waiting room. I was placed at the general medicine area and my job was to collect the prescription from the patient after being checked by the doctor, lead them to another waiting room and give the prescription to one of the handlers which will then look for the medicine. Once the medicine is found, it is double checked by some other volunteers to make sure the right medicine is given, then my job was to call the person from the waiting room and lead them to the releaser who will then let the patient sign a form, so that the patient can leave with their medication. At first I thought my job was quite boring, since patients only came in one at a time. However, as time went on, I had to deal with around 5-10 patients who gave in their prescription at one time. Some patients were very demanding, and aggressive. They claimed that they asked for medicine before another person and some were begging me to hurry up because they had a "headache" and that they needed their medication ASAP. All I could say was that some medicines are easier to find than others, and that we were doing our best. After a while, there were too many patients on the hallway, and it was getting really, really hot and crowded, so we moved all the patients to a bigger waiting area. This went on until around 11.30 AM when Mrs. Fang Lin Chen called William and I, so that we may have a quick rest. After our quick coffee and bread break, we went to drink some water from the main hallway, but we were quickly interrupted when a lady came up to us and asked if we were volunteers. We of course, said yes, so she asked us to bring a 5 gallon water container up to the third floor of the building and across the campus! It was crazy tiring. When we made it back to the general surgery area, we hurried back into our post. By around 12.30, the patients were coming in at a slow pace, and we thought we would be done early, so we went on a lunch break. The food was pretty good, it was all vegetarian. At around 1 PM, we got back to work again and found out that we were wrong, there was a whole new wave of patients, but this time William was in the same post as me, so we took turns in collecting prescriptions and calling the patient with the prepared medication. I asked one of the other volunteers how many more patients we were going to allow in, and she said that we would stop at the 400th person mark. At one point, one of the patients were really begging me to hurry up with their medicine because of her grandpa, so I went to one of the handlers to ask them if they could hurry up with that specific patient (all patients had a number tag), and she yelled at me and said that   her job wasn't easy and that she's trying her best and that I should tell the patient to wait like everybody else. Of course I didn't tell the patient this, but after a few more minutes, the patient finally got her grandpa's medication. At around 3 PM, we passed the 400th mark, and Mrs. Fang Lin Chen told us that it was time to go home. It was a great experience for me, and I learned how sad some people's lives are and how much they need help, but also  realized how thankful I should be for what I have and continue to help those who are not as blessed.

This form must be submitted to and approved by the CAS Coordinator BEFORE you begin your work.

Armand Mendoza

Tzu Chi Medical Mission

Tzu Chi, a Buddhist foundation founded in Taiwan has provided aid to many people in many different cases, such as the Haiti earthquake and Typhoon disasters in the Philippines. This Sunday, (November 14) a medical mission will take place in manila where we aim to provide medicine for less fortunate patients. My roles will also include assisting the doctors with anything they may ask for. There will be many volunteers, doctors and nurses who will collaborate this Sunday.

My goal is to help doctors and nurses to provide aid to less fortunate people with their medical issues. I hope to make a lot of people happy during this process and improve my team building skills at the same time.

The patients who need help will obviously benefit from this event as everything provided will be free. My collaborators and I will also definitely learn from this experience as well as it is my first time to be doing something like this before. (I've been with my dad in his medical missions when I was a little kid, but I don't recall helping out at all.)

The Tzu Chi Medical Mission will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at the Tzu Chi Great Love Campus in 1000 Cordillera corner Lubiran Streets Bacood, Sta. Mesa, Manila. The event will last from Sunday morning until Sunday afternoon.

CAS Proposal Form 3 (Boy's Varsity Soccer)

This form must be submitted to and approved by the CAS Coordinator BEFORE you begin your work.

Armand Mendoza

Boys Varsity Soccer

I am currently part of the Boys Varsity Soccer team. My role is switched between being a striker and mid-fielder. I work together with my teammates everyday from 4-6 pm. In joining this team, I hope to improve my skills, strengthen my sportsmanship, build leadership skills and to learn how to collaborate with new teammates.

I hope to improve my stamina, my speed, my leadership skills, and my sportsmanship. Soccer practice can be very demanding and time consuming, and with the IB workload, there will be challenges in doing a good job in both areas. However, this will train me to learn how to manage my time wisely and be a more balanced student. Since there are only 2 non koreans in the team (Javier and I), I foresee some challenges in teamwork as I might be seen as an outsider, but hopefully as this season progresses, I can prove myself and be trusted by my teammates as I will learn to do for them as well, and come ISAC, we should be playing as one team to win the gold.

Joining the team will definitely benefit me, as the training itself will help me stay fit and improve my stamina, speed, and leg strength. My teammates and the coach as well will also benefit from this activity as playing together will develop new friendships, and win or lose, if we play well, will also benefit us all, including the coach.

Everyday from 4-6 pm. ISAC tournament on January 19-23, 2011.
